Description: At the end of the module, students will be able to:
● Identify the biggest challenges around food production and consumption worldwide e.g. discussing the influence of Climate Change on our food systems and the nutritional status of our food.
● Assess the global Food system and situation, taking socio-economic factors into account
● Appraise the interconnected nature of nutritional problems with a focus on human health in low-resource settings.
● Explain and critically discuss global and local strategies to address malnutrition worldwide, e.g. explain the Planetary Health diet and discuss its advantages and disadvantages among others.
Assessment Procedures: The evaluation will be assessed on the following terms:

1. Individual Class Attendance:
Students are expected to attend a minimum of 80% of all classes

2. Group work and presentation:
At the beginning of the course, participants are presented with a case study. Participants work on the case in teams/small groups during the two-week course and give an oral presentation of maximum 20 minutes on the last course day. Presentations will be assessed based on a pass/fail scale.

3. Post-course assignment:
After the group presentation, students will prepare an individually written summary (no more than 3 pages) of the case study, including feedback from other course participants.

The final grade is based on the post-course assignment (individually written summary), which can only be submitted if the student attended at least 80% of the course and has contributed to the group work.The pass mark for the post-course assignment is at 60%.

Resit: Students who do not pass the post-course assignment will be given the opportunity to re-sit within the next two weeks by writing an essay of which the topic will be provided by the course coordination.
Content: 1. Introduction to global challenges around food and nutrition (e.g. malnutrition, poverty, , climate change)
2. Special focus on: Food systems (e.g. production and consumption) for nutritional security and better health
o Food Security and its impact on health
o Socio-economic Dynamics of Food Systems (e.g. equity aspects, regional inequalities)
o Food Loss and Waste
o Food Environments and health as well as disease implications
o Sustainability of Food Systems (e.g. agriculture)
3. The Effect of Nutrition on Health
o Immune Dysfunction as a cause and consequence of malnutrition and cardiovascular disease
o Paediatric obesity: A silent emergency in sub-Saharan Africa
o Undernutrition and the double burden of malnutrition – an example from Ethiopia
4. Global strategies to address malnutrition (incl. different types of malnutrition
5. Local strategies to address malnutrition – examples from different countries
Methods: The overall module is split into three parts:
a) Individual asynchronous pre-reading over the first 2 weeks, before the tutor-facilitated online course starts (24% of the overall module)
b) a synchronous tutor-facilitated online learning module (53% of the overall module), delivered by using participatory learning methods: interactive lectures led by experts in the field, individual and group exercises (e.g. break-out sessions), role-playing/simulations and case studies.
c ) individually written post-course assignment (22% of the overall module)
Prerequisites: Proof of English competence: Good working knowledge of English (TOEFL iBT ≥ 79; IELTS score ≥ 6.0, or an equivalent approved test) is required. tropEd students from an accredited tropEd home institution who have passed a core course in English will be considered sufficiently fluent in the English language. Also, students who can provide proof of academic education at Bachelor’s level passed in English will be considered sufficiently fluent.

Participants do not require previous knowledge on nutrition and health as basic knowledge will be acquired through the pre-course reading material

As it is an online course, access to a computer, a webcam as well as a microphone, and a stable internet connection is required.

Selection: Participants are selected on a first-come, first-serve basis.
Fees: 200 Euro
Scholarships: The Teaching and Training Unit (TTU) at CIHLMU would like to offer students from low- and middle-income settings in Germany and worldwide the opportunity to apply for a scholarship to reduce or waive the respective tuition fees, provided that places in the Advanced Module are still available. The decision on such course fee reductions will only be made on an individual basis. If a student is interested, the student’s CV and a letter of motivation (no longer than 500 words) outlining the student’s current situation and personal motivation for attending the Advanced Module should be send to ttu@lrz.uni-muenchen.de.
tropEd accreditation: This course was accredited in the EC TelCo in March 2023. This accreditation is valid until March 2028.
