Description: At the end of the module students should be able to:
● Develop an intervention to improve the hospital quality management by using the model of total quality management (TQM)
● Analyse current practice of quality management in hospitals in LMIC context
● Identify the quality management models that are appropriate for the resource limited context
● Explain the roles and importance of quality and quality management
Assessment Procedures: Assessment will be based on class participation, individual field trip reflection report and group-work assignment.

● Individual field-trip report: 40%
Students are required to report on what they have learned from the virtual field-trip about the hospital quality management in hospitals in Vietnam, and their thoughts about what they have observed after watching a scenario/case-study from a video of quality management in Vietnam hospital. This report should be between 1200-word and 1500-word length and should be submitted to the course coordinator no later than three days after the virtual field-trip.
Criteria for assessment: The individual field trip report should be written to meet with the requirements as below
- Identify the recent situation of quality management in hospitals in Vietnam
- Compare the quality management in hospitals in Vietnam to the students‘ countries
- Lessons learned from the quality management in hospital quality management in Vietnam
- Recommend and suggest for quality management in hospitals in LMIC context
- The report should be formatted in Word with 12 pt font and 1.5 spaced, Times New Roman is preferred, meet with the length and due date requirements.
A mark in the 0-10 range with fulfil the criteria for assessment. The mark from 5.0 or above will pass, according to The Vietnamese grading system is based on a 0-10 point scale.
● Group-work assignment: 60%.
Students working in groups of 3-5 people, are required to prepare for one writing report and one presentation

⮚ Group presentation: Each group are required present a plan by applying the model of total quality management (TQM) to develop an intervention to improve the hospital quality management in resource limited context). Each group will present their work in class via video conference (ZOOM) within maximum 20 minutes and have 20 minutes to respond to comments of the other students and the course coordinator.
Failing students will be given a chance to resubmit their paper that has addressed the comments given. This should be done within 2 weeks and will be reassessed by the course coordinator.
Criteria for assessment: The group presentation should be writen to meet with the requirements as below
- Develop an intervention plan (from step 1 to step 4) by applying the model of total quality management (TQM)
- Identify and explain the reason for priority problem improving
- Present the suitable data and evidence based information to support for intervention plan
- Analyse the problem to find the root causes and develop a feasible and effective solution and intervention plan
- The report should be formatted in Powerpoint, Arial is preferred, 20-25 slides and due date requirements
A mark in the 0-10 range with fulfil the criteria for assessment. The mark from 5.0 or above will pass, according to The Vietnamese grading system is based on a 0-10 point scale.
Note: all assessment questions/requirements will be introduced to students at the beginning of the course.
Content: The main topics covered in this module are as follows:
1. Overview of quality and quality management models, identifying quality management models that are appropriate for limited resource context (e.g. Deming, TQM, Six Sigma, LEAN,...)
2. Introduction to quality management index and hospital management orientation in Vietnam
3. Identification of quality problems
4. Evaluation of the problem situation in quality enhancement
5. Analysis of the quality problem
6. Solution and quality improvement planning
7. Results, standardization and future plans
8. Experience-sharing in applying quality management in hospital with a resource limited context
9. Virtual field-visit to a hospital in Vietnam, with a focus on the quality control department. By watching a scenario/case-study from a video, students will have the opportunity to observe and understand the activities of quality management in Vietnam hospital, how they are implemented. Besides, students will know the advantages/disadvantages of quality activities in hospital and experiences of the hospital in quality management which is stated by the hospital quality Board
Methods: A variety of methods is used including lectures, group discussion, tutorials/virtual field-visit, individual work, student presentation and major assignment:
● Synchronous contact via video conference or online teaching platform (30 hours)
- In which, 20 hours of lecturing (synchronous contact) via video conference (ZOOM) and 10 hours for group discussion with the lecturers guidelines/supports via video conference (ZOOM) (3-4 students/group) to identify the quality management model, select the prioritize problem, analyse the situation and propose the problem-solving for quality improvement in the resource limited context.
● Self-study activities (40 hours) which includes reading relevant materials to support lectures, group discussion for group exercises, completing small homework
● Virtual assisted tutorial/field-trip to a hospital (4 hours) focus on the quality control department. By watching a scenario/case-study from a video, students will have the opportunity to observe and understand the activities of quality management in Vietnam hospital, how they are implemented. Besides, students will know the advantages/disadvantages of quality activities in hospital and experiences of the hospital in quality management which is stated by the hospital quality Board.
● Reflective report (4 hours)
● Seminar for individual assignment presentation (4 hours) via video conference (ZOOM)
● Assignment (8 hours) via video conference (ZOOM)
Prerequisites: ● Proficiency in English: TOEFL 550 or IELTS 6.0, s tudents admitted to a Master Degree Program within tropEd Network may join this course.
● Technical equipment requirements for online teaching:
Computer/laptop with a stable internet connection, good headset (or speaker and microphone), Camera, Sufficient Data volume, Sufficient bandwidth
The work place should be set up in a room no effect of noise and sound surrounding.
Time zone at GMT+7 (Vietnam Timezone)
Attendance: The number of students is limited to 20, max no. of tropEd students is 10.

Remarks: Quality of health services is one of the important health indicators in all countries. Improving quality of health services is one of the crucial issues for the current implementation and development in hospitals, especially in hospitals or health facilities with the resource limited context.
This course provides for students the fundamental knowledge on hospital quality management to continuously improve the competency of hospital quality management in the resource limited context through problem analysis and solving.
