Description:
At the end of the module students will be able to:
● Explain the roles and importance of quality and quality management
● Identify the quality management models that are appropriate for resource limited contexts
● Analyse the principles of hospital quality management
● Use the model of total quality management (TQM) to develop an intervention to improve the hospital quality management |

Assessment Procedures:
A minimum attendance of 80% all lecturers is mandatory. Students attend less than 80% of lectures must re-take the course.
The grading scheme is a point scale 0 to 10, with 10 is the top grade. Average grade comprises of group presentation and individual essay as below:
Group oral presentation: 40%
Students working in groups of 3-5 people, are required to prepare a presentation. Students working in groups of 3-5 people. They are required to prepare an intervention plan to improve the quality of the health care services in the resource limited contexts. Each group will present their work in class via video conference (ZOOM) within maximum 20 minutes and have 20 minutes to respond to comments of the other students and the course lecturers.
Individual essay: 60%
Students are required to write an essay about what lessons they have learned from the course and how they can apply it to improve the quality of services provided in their hospital/ organization in a limited resource setting. The length of the essay should be from 1200 words to 1500 words. The student will submit their essay a week after the end of the course
Evaluation grades will be communicated within 15 days after the submission of the final assignment.
Students have to pass the average mark of presentation and essay ≥ 5.5 points. Students with average grade |

Content:
The main topics covered in this module are as follows:
1. Overview of quality and quality management models, identifying quality management models that are appropriate for limited resource contexts
2. Identification of quality problems
3. Evaluation of a problem situation in quality enhancement
4. Analysis of a quality problem
5. Solution and quality improvement planning
6. Results, standardization and future plans
7. Experience-sharing in applying quality management in hospitals in resource limited contexts
8. Virtual field-visit to a hospital in Vietnam, with a focus on the quality control department. |

Methods:
A variety of methods are used including lectures, group discussion, tutorials/virtual field-visit, individual work, student presentation and major assignment:
● 30 hours of lectures (synchronous contact via video conference or online teaching platform) to introduce students to principles of quality and hospital quality management, identify the quality management models in the resource limited context.
- In which, 20 hours of lecturing via video conference (MS Teams/ZOOM) to introduce students to principles of quality and hospital quality management, quality management models in the resource limited context;
- And 10 hours for group discussion with the lecturer’s guidelines/supports via video conference (MS Team/ ZOOM) (3-4 students/group) to identify the quality management model, select the prioritized problem, analyse the situation and propose the problem-solving for quality improvement in the resource limited context.
● 15 hours for self-study activities (reading relevant materials to support lectures, group discussion for group exercises, completing small homework). Students have self-study time for reading the learning materials related to principles of quality and hospital quality management, quality management models). Then each student will complete the questionnaires (MCQs, short answers) after reading these documents via online teaching platform (e-learning)
● 20 hours for seminar for individual assignment presentation via video conference (MS team/ZOOM)
● 25 hours for major assignment accomplishment |

Prerequisites:
Proficiency in English:
TOEFL 550 or IELTS 6.0, Students admitted to a Master Degree Program within tropEd Network are assumed to have sufficient proficiency in English language. |

Assessment changed from three assignments in the first accreditation (Field trip reflection, group oral presentation and essay) to two assignments (group oral presentation and individual essay) |

Student evaluation:
Feedback from the Vietnamese students: They were satisfied with the active learning by applying the TQM model in improving the quality of health services. However, they did not have enough time for three assignments. |

Remarks:
Quality of health services is one of the important health indicators in all countries. Improving quality of health services is one of the crucial issues for the current implementation and development in hospitals, especially in hospitals or health facilities with the resource limited context.
This course provides students with the fundamental knowledge on hospital quality management for continuous improvement in resource limited contexts through problem analysis and solving |
