Online learning
● Pre-reading (before departure) = 5 hours
● Pre-test (before departure) = 1 x 1 hours = 1 hours
● Self directed study = 42 hours
● Final assignment preparation = 25 hours

Face-to-face (lectures):
● In class lectures = 17 x 2 hours = 34 hours
● Tutorial session = 2 x 2 hours = 4 hours

Face-to-face (assessment):
● Presentation and discussion = 1 x 3 hours = 3 hours

TOTAL = 114 hours
Language: English
Description:
.
At the end of the course students are expected to be able to:
1. Formulate implementation research problem statement
2. Explain the characteristics of implementation research
3. Identify public health problems, which possibly contain
implementation research problems
4. Design implementation research study
5. Apply capacity building in performing implementation research
6. Apply dissemination and scaling up after conducting implementation research
Assessment Procedures:
.
Students will take a pre-test as soon as they are enrolled in the course (1 hour). This test will evaluate students’ preparation for the course.

At the end of the first week, students will have a midterm test (1 hour). Presentation (group assignment) will be conducted at the end of the course as an examination (3 hours).

Each student has to design an implementation research study and write it into a proposal as the final assignment. At the end of the course, students have to present their proposals. The
complete proposal should be submitted 7 days after lectures have ended.

The assessment of this course is weighted as follows:
1. Pre-test: 10%
2. Midterm: 20%
3. Presentation (group assignment): 20%
4. Final assignment: 50%

The presentation will be addressed as a group assignment.
● Students will present their findings based on the study case they choose in front of the class and it will be followed by a discussion
● Each group will be given 15 minutes to present their findings and another 15 minutes for discussion
● Students will get the grade individually according to their performance during discussions and presentations in class

If a student does not achieve more than 60% on the overall, they must improve their proposal and submit it within 2 weeks after the grade announcement.

This course use letter grade system with the following range
A = 75 - 100
A- = 72.5 – 74.99
A/B = 70 – 72.49
B+ = 67.5 – 69.99
B = 65 – 67.49
B- = 62.5 – 64.99
B/C = 60 – 62.49
C+ = 57.5 – 59.99
C = 55 – 57.49
C- = 52.5 – 54.99
C/D = 50 – 52.49
D+ = 47.5 – 49.99
D = 45 – 47.49
E = < 45

Methods:
.This course is a combination between online learning and faceto-face for its lectures and assessment. Students will receive course materials 7 days in advance. Students should read the
materials received as self-directed learning prior to the course commencing. After students read the reading materials, students will be given a pre-test.

Students are required to undertake self-directed learning for 42 hours after the course has commenced until the course is completed to support their outcome (proposal). Two tutorial sessions will facilitate the students to develop their proposal.
Prerequisites:
.Students must be enrolled in an MPH/M.Sc/Master in International Health programme.

English proficiency: Certificate for English TOEFL test with at least a score of 550 points (paper based) or 213 points (computer-based) or 79/80 (internet-based) or IELTS band 6.0. For students who have the classes in English, kindly provide a statement letter from relevant institutions stating that classes are delivered in English.
Attendance:
.The maximum number of students that may enroll in this course is 30 students; The maximum number of MPH students is 20 students and the maximum number of TropEd students is 10 students
Students with a minimum 75% attendance are eligible to take the course final examination

Major changes since initial accreditation: We’ve recently conducted an Implementation Research (IR) competency gap assessment of our course curriculum based on the IR competency framework developed by WHO/TDR
(https://gh.bmj.com/content/4/5/e001747.long). Based on this assessment, we’ve identified a few minor gaps that we plan to address for future students by providing supplementary video
lectures. These videos are currently being developed with WHO/TDR and partner universities
Student evaluation: The Implementation Research for Public Health course at UGM has been accredited by the tropEd Network since 2018 and commenced in 2016. The majority of students find the course highly engaging and beneficial, with most feeling that
the learning objectives, course materials, and workload are appropriate. However, there are some suggestions for improvement, such as extending the duration and enhancing class discussions. Overall, the course is perceived as very stimulating and provides valuable experience for students in
the context of implementation research for public health
Lessons learned: The quality of the final assignments in general has been high.
Most of the completed assignments have been further developed into implementation research proposals which subsequently have been successfully completed and some have led to publications in reputable international journals. A few students experienced challenges in completing the final assignments, which to our observations seems to be related to some variation of prior exposure to research method as there
are variations of research method courses from where the students were trained previously. In such cases, we need to provide additional tutorial/mentoring to ensure these students
can complete the final assignments successfully.We also observed that the students could benefit from more concrete examples of implementation research projects. This is now addressed by drawing examples, particularly from completed projects we’ve accumulated in the past five years
tropEd accreditation:
Accredited in July 2018. Re-accredited in Cuernavaca, June 2024. This accreditation is valid until June 2029.
